For some reason I can't figure out how to highlight things on here. Here is what I wanted to highlight:
In colonial New England, Halloween celebrations were limited due to rigid Protestant beliefs. However, Halloween was more common in Maryland and the southern colonies.
I found this very interesting as it is reflective of settlement patterns in what is now the United States. New England was settled mainly by people from East Anglia. Maryland was a Catholic colony and the South was settled mainly by people from the West Country. Each group are culturally distinct. In the UK when I was there in the 70s Halloween was basically not celebrated. Now they have parties, at least in London with lots of young people dressing up and going out in costume. The two best cities in the US for public parties on Halloween are San Francisco and the Greenwich Village area of New York.
