I had one of those table hockey games as a kid of the second kind you mentioned but I seem to recall that the puck was a yellow foam ball and not hard at all but you could do passing and as you say a rudimentary slap shot.

We also had a couple of variations of American football for tabletop play particularly one where the entire surface of the 'field' vibrated to move the players. It was pretty lame.
