I read one interesting analysis that said that the Germans would have succeeded in the Kaiserschlacht in 1918 if they had just provided themselves with pre-formed metal road surfaces. You know the kind of sheets with holes in them. The problem they had was that all of their supplies came to the front by rail too their rear areas but because of the devastation caused by shelling they had to carry them across no man's land to the newly captured allied rail heads and so they had a terrible bottle neck, and the advancing troops quickly outran their supplies. If they had the metaled road surfaces to lay down, they could have transferred the supplies to trucks and kept pace with their advance.
