I think that sexual exhibitionism is innate to our species. What has changed is the scale. Previously one could not indulge in this sort of behaviour before more people than could fit into a room. Now, with the internet one can in theory perform for millions. I think it's that scale that gives it an appearance of being a disease of our times rather than it being inherently any more vulgar and tasteless than many humans have always been.
