I was 18 during the gas crisis occasioned by the OPEC oil embargo during the 1973 October/Yom Kippur war. I saw the lines at the gas stations and decided that the Middle East was going to become more important and that anybody who could learn Arabic would have opportunities, so I decided to study Arabic and go work in the Middle East which is exactly what I did.
