I was sued for $9 billion alleging fraud, aiding and abetting fraud. It was a punitive lawsuit designed to break me and get me to perjure myself in testimony against my boss who was the real target. This is an utter failure of the US legal system. Anyone can bring a lawsuit against anyone irrespective of the merits and the whole idea is that anyone with deep pockets can break someone poorer who has to cave rather than lose everything that they have. It cost me $7.5 million and two and half years of hell to win that suit. Thankfully I had enough money to defend myself. But you really have no recourse, and you can't sue the lawyers who brought the suit maliciously and the cost of trying to counter sue afterwards are even more onerous. If I had been in the UK, they wouldn't have dared to bring the suit as under their system, losers pay costs. In the US the lawyers have written all the rules to protect themselves and their fees.
