Most of the fairy tales are fairly gruesome or bloody and I can understand you not teaching them to 5-year-olds.

This kind of revisionism has become more prevalent. An early example of it is the novel Grendel by John Gardner published in 1971 which tells the story of Beowulf from the monster's point of view. You might enjoy it.
