Perhaps divorce rates these days reflect in part the fact that with greater population densities in urban areas that there is too much choice and as humans are exogamous people tend to change partners more readily than they would in a more thinly populated rural environment such as existed in the past. It's not necessarily a failure of marriage it's a reflection of a massive change in social environment.
