Perhaps I should have said English rather than using the more encompassing term 'Brit.'

I'm of Scots descent myself. My grandfather was born in Selkirk and my grandmother McDonald's antecedents on her father's side were from Ballyshannon in county Donegal, before they emigrated to Canada. Members of Clan Donald have been in Northern Ireland for centuries before the plantations.

Her mother's line traces to a Muirhead from Cambuslang parish outside of Glasgow and his wife was a MacPhail from Tiree. Both were cleared by the Duke of Argyll and packed off to Canada in the 1840s where they met and married in Ontario.

Although not highly educated both of my grandparents had very good table manners.

I'm also pretty sure that my grandmother would never have used margarine although my grandfather did have that working class habit of putting condensed milk in his tea.
