Somebody dropped a lit cigarette on the escalator. It got down into the mechanism and caught the lubricating grease on fire which as the fire grew became an inferno through the tunnel. The escalator was made of wood as were many of the older escalators in the London Underground. 31 dead and over 100 injured. That was in 1987.
