That would have been about 1960. It's a very scary movie for a child. The Martians hide their ships under the surface of the earth and anyone who walks by is sucked down through the dirt into the ship. For some reason there was a large pile of sawdust in the basement of the house that we were renting. I was convinced that there were Martians lurking in that were active after dark.
But you don't need film to scare children. I don't have th quote exactly right as it from memory but as a child Theodore Roosevelt was afraid to go to church as a result of some sermon in which the Minister said, "The zeal of your house has eaten me up (or consumed me)." Young Teddy thought that the zeal was some sort of monster that lurked in the corners of the church.
