This is what we get because your Kohanim didn't keep the Old Testament to themselves as some sort of secret text stashed away in the holy of holies that they and only they could read. But nooooo! They let it fall into the hands of a bunch of Germanic yahoos, Anglo-Saxons, Swedes and other squareheads who have taken the thing literally.
