This reminds me of a scene in, I think the novel Zadig by Voltaire. There is a young widow whose husband's mausoleum is by a stream. She vows to have no other man as long as the stream flows pat her husband's tomb. After some time has elapsed someone enquires as to how she is doing. The answer is, 'She is diverting the stream".
