When I was younger, I read most of the Penguin English library. I could never make it through all of the Barchester novels.

Here's my question for you which I like to ask all English majors and which I posed to the Professor of English at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge some years ago and got an unsatisfactory answer which I will reveal if you answer this.

What is the greatest English novel?

And I don't mean a novel written in the English language. That accolade goes to an Irishman. I mean written by an Englishman.
